In the last couple of days I have been looking into a vr setup and it's looking like I could have my hands on a HTC vive or a consumer version of the rift by March next year. I have been talking to the guy who made this video for an Assetto Corsa mod a few months back and by all accounts we should be able to do something similar in rfactor2, once either of those devices are released. youtu.be/Dq1UmHyD8-USeriously I need this in my life.

Excellent video. Now to work on a game plan to one of these into my life. Definitely puts the idea of purchasing a TrackIR 5 to rest. Save the coin to put towards something like this instead.
Cheers for sharing, Chris.

In talking to this guy he thinks these vr sets should be around $500. So it is probably cheaper than a multiple monitor setup too (sorry Bwana) and trackir is still pretty dear too. He did warn me that it becomes impossible to drive with out vr once you become accustomed to it, things like closing speeds and braking distances are much harder to judge once you have done it in 3D.

Yep. Giving it a couple of years until bugs are sorted and fully supported in rf2only a single here ?. Resolution very poor atm in rf2. What you see in that vid isn't indicative of what you see in a set apparently

What you see in that vid isn't indicative of what you see in a set apparently Yeah that's the dev kits bwana, we discussed all of that too. He was saying the view distance beyond 200m is just a blur and you also get the "screen door affect" Where you can see the black between each pixel, but this is all stuff that is being ironed out before the sets hit the shelf. They have also been waiting for screens with a higher ppi. Currently they are just getting to that point. If anyone has used a gear VR with a Note4 they will know what I am talking about. The Note4 has 517 ppi, but Sony have just released a smart phone with an 806 ppi. Those screens are starting to become affordable for your average consumer and that's what the retail devices are waiting for. No doubt there will be problems with compatibility and the rest of it. Honestly I will be going with the sim racing product that best implements this kind of technology. It's literally a game changer.

I would wait until it has been out for sometime supporting RF2 as Bwana says its buggy and resolution is not that great at the moment appearantly. I have 3 24 inch monitors which are good, but, if I use the multiview in RF2, it takes some getting used to with the fov. It does give you the effect of being in a car though and you see so much more of the track. You can pick up 3 24 in monitors for about 450 or less nowadays. I,d say the real advantage of the VR setup would be for 1st person games more so than racing games.
And until you really got used to it, be prepared for a big drop in speed.

You maybe right Fat (and Bwana) normally I'm against early adopting for those sort of reasons. However for technology this exciting I'm willing to make an exception.
I'm confused why first person shooters would suit the tech better. You would think that sitting at a desk with a wheel in your hand and pedals under your feet would be close to what you're seeing through the headset in a racing game, you turn the wheel and the digital wheel turns. However a fps game you have a mouse instead of a weapon and a keyboard instead of walking. That seems like a real disconnect to me. I know there's motion controllers and things like that coming, but we don't need any of that.
Anyway I will be keeping a close eye on these devices over the next 6 months.

All good as long as you don't want to use key board to do pit stop, change a setting etc. Just would not be able to see any peripheral device or anything other than what is on the screen.
